I respect the academic endeavours of some of my colleagues, I do. I’ve done more than my fair share of study but have found little practical application for much of it in my 20 years as a tax agent. The TPB do of course have minimum standards for the completion of certain academic modules and there are of course always perplexing peculiar tax questions that require a specialist in order to get the correct answer.  The tax agent just needs to know when he or she requires further input.

But sadly, the accounting fundamentals are often underappreciated – you know silly things like debits and credits. A well prepared, fully reconciled, properly vouched ledger is the key to proper tax return preparation. I fear that there are tax agents out there that don’t/couldn’t complete that task. Yet without it done well there is little chance of getting the tax return correct.

As a public practicing bookkeeper, you need to check which academic modules you need to complete (if any) to obtain your full tax agent licence. But do the industry a favour and go and get it/them, because experienced bookkeepers make better tax agents.
